VEAZIE, Maine — Police arrested two women and seized 180 grams of bath salts, drug paraphernalia, marijuana and about 200 illegal prescription drug pills after a traffic stop Thursday night.
Veazie police Officer Dain Byrant stopped a 2000 Dodge Neon that was traveling 63 mph in a 35 mph zone on State Street, Veazie Police Chief Mark Leonard said Friday morning.
The driver, April Kane, 26, of Bangor, had conditions from a previous arrest that allowed police to search her vehicle, person or home at any time.
During the search, police found more than 180 grams of the synthetic drug bath salts — with a street value of more than $18,000 — and about 3 ounces of what police suspect is liquid methadone hidden in a speaker in the rear of the car, according to Leonard.
Police also confiscated $1,500 in cash, scales and packaging they believe were used in trafficking, 33 grams of marijuana, more than 200 prescription drugs that weren’t prescribed to Kane and “a large amount of drug paraphernalia,” Leonard said.
Danielle Crudell, 26, of Prospect, a passenger in the vehicle, also was under conditions of release from a previous arrest. While searching her, police found hypodermic needles, including one that contained bath salts, as well as medications that weren’t prescribed to her, Leonard said.
Police said Crudell has been using bath salts while pregnant.
Both women were arrested and taken to the Penobscot County Jail. Kane was charged with trafficking in synthetic hallucinogenic drugs and violation of conditions of release. Crudell was charged with unlawful possession of scheduled drugs and violation of conditions of release.
The women were still in jail Friday afternoon and bail had not been set. They are scheduled to make their first court appearance on Monday, according to a jail official.
Police say more charges could be pending, and anyone with further information about Kane or Crudell is asked to call Veazie police at 947-2358.
Orono police and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
